I've been a small business owner

I've had sleepless nights trying to figure out how to make payroll. I've risked my mortgage. I’ve asked for help — only to get answers that were more lip service than life preservers. 

It’s mentally and emotionally exhausting. 

And I’m not alone. One business owner once told me, “I sell more every year, but I never make any money.” The vague, zero-thought-invested advice he was getting: Cut expenses. 

What he really needed was someone to get more specific so he could better understand what was actually going on. Insights that would help him spot the high-margin services that were already working — and double down on those.

That’s what real help looks like. It’s meaningful and actionable. 

The truth: Canadian small businesses need real support 

That’s why we’re creating Huumans: a human-first support system for small business owners.

It’s a safe haven. A place where you can ask questions — without being sold something you don’t need. A space where you get clear, trustworthy solutions that helps you make mission-critical business decisions.

It’s not about being impressive. It’s about being useful.

We’re here to cut through the noise about managing a business and finding the best answers to your questions.

The backstory: What led me to Huumans 

After founding two successful small business financial services, Ledgers, Canada’s first official accounting franchise, and Wagepoint small business payroll, there were still stones left unturned.

After three weeks of retirement, I was bored out of my mind. As I sifted through the “news” in a post-truth society, I started wondering how anyone knows what’s real anymore. 

Carrying this line of thought a few steps further, in the case of small businesses, they’re constantly bombarded with people trying to sell them stuff — but who’s there to help? I mean really help?‍

How do you separate the salesman from the sage? 

The problem with the current small business support landscape is that it’s cluttered and noisy. There’s lots of flash, but no cutting to the chase. This is why I decided to create a hub where kindness is clarity in the form of relevant, unbiased information.

How will Huumans be different?

It starts with a hub. In Huumans’ case, this will be where small businesses connect to find the products and services they need when they need them the most. But it will be more that that. It'll be a place where you can connect with real human advisors and hear first-hand stories from other small businesses.

Why two u’s in Huumans?

One, I believe in asking good questions. Second, I feel strongly that each one of us is accountable for the role we play. In other words, we each need to be accountable for our role in the human chain.

Leading with generosity, I added an extra "u" to put the “you” back in Huumans.
