Small business advice, minus the noise

TLDR
For 15 years, this Calgary-based small business owner struggled with unclear advice to cut costs — not knowing what actions to take and not moving forward. Until he had the right conversation and got clear, actionable insights.

An all too familiar story

A Calgary-based retail business had growing sales and steady margins, but zero bottom-line growth. After 15 years of operation, the owner felt like he was working harder each year — only to stay in the exact same place.

The same old line

‍Time and again, the owner reached out for advice, only to hear, “You need to lower your costs.” The thing is, there are a lot of costs involved in running a small business, so which costs were they? And, which ones were relevant to this business?

The clarity was in the right conversation

Short of visiting a Jedi master in an out-of-the-way intergalactic swamp, what the business owner really needed was a better understanding of the factors affecting his business.

What changed? He had a meeting with Huumans’ founder, Bill Murphy, who helped him see that the answer was actually focusing and building up some of his most profitable business lines. In other words, doing more of what was working, rather than looking for places to trim margins. One simple conversation was all it took to undo 15 years of frustration.

The power of clear advice

There’s a difference between issuing platitudes versus helping someone better understand their business. With clear, actionable information, business owners can make better decisions and live better lives. All it takes is the time to act like Huumans.
